Hello again all my fine doll making friends! Today's spotlight is on new member Linda Searle of Linda Searle Dolls. Linda hails from Tasmania and although she's been a wildlife and still life painter for years, she's only been doll making for the past 4. Hard to believe, right?! I think you will agree that her dolls, which range from vintage to contemporary in style, are simply enchanting. You can find more of her work in her Etsy shop and at her blog. Welcome to the ADO team Linda!

ADO Featured Artist: Karey Kline
This week's artist feature is Karey Kline, of Kaerie Faerie.
Please tell us about yourself. What is your name? Where do you live? What makes you tick?
Karen Kline, I use my nickname Karey, I'm originally from Chicago, and I now live in Grand Island FL, which is located in Central FL in the countryside’s. I have cows and horses for neighbors. I adore outrageous fashion, couture gowns, and Deco Period Interior Design.

When did you start making dolls? Why did you start making dolls?
I started making dolls as a child, 40 years ago, I sewed with my mother, she made clothes and dolls, and I have always enjoyed sewing and making my own clothes, and making little dolls.

Who or what influences you? Inspires you?
My mom is a big influence on my artistic life, my Scandinavian background, my Swedish grandmother was a 20's flapper, and she rouged her knees, and bobbed her hair. I'm inspired by all books by Dr. Seuss, he was an amazing cartoonist.
Tell us a little about your dolls and your process for making them. Materials, preliminary sketches, inspiration, etc.
I like to use high thread count cottons, starting with a paper pattern I cut (12 inches is my favorite size doll). I use paper towel to size the clothing, I wrap it and pin it on the doll using the doll like a dress form. My inspiration comes from the hunt for fabrics to dress my dolls, I usually decide on the outfit before the doll, so it is like making a doll to wear the perfect dress.

Do you have a favorite doll? It can be handmade by you, handmade by someone else, or even (gasp) mass production.
My favorite dolls are called "Secrets" I probably made these 10 years ago, two little faeries whispering secrets, it was inspired by stories of faeries in my room at night telling secrets, I grew up in a old creaky house, Mother use to tell me all the little noises where faeries.

Besides making dolls, what do you do? Job, other creative pursuits, hobbies, etc.
I work a marine dispatch phone for our business called Sea-Tow, I have all the phone lines set up in my studio, so I can make dolls at the same time, it is only busy on the weekends when people are out boating, we handle rescues, and boat towing, my husband is the Captain, and we have a fleet of boats that cover 2,000 inland lakes.
What are some of your favorite: movies, books, websites, magazines, foods, tv shows? (Any or all!)
Favorite movie, Marie Antoinette, the costumes and cakes and goodies and shoes are amazing. I read all fashion and doll magazines. ADO is my favorite Website the artists are a wonderful group. I don't watch much TV; I prefer to listen to rock and jazz. I love peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
I would love to live in the Florida Keys, and have a little boat to run around in.
Where do you see yourself in one year? Five years? Ten years?
Still making dolls, living a quiet retired life in the country with my husband and cats.

Treasury Alert!
A new treasury to see, this time by flightfancy. A beautiful collction from members of our very own ADO team.
More ADO Challenge Works In Progress
Hello Friends!
This Monday sends us a new round of wonderful Works-In-Progress from our ADO members. Basically this means that I'll be showing you a few of our Challenge Doll projects as they are being made, courtesy of each member that is being profiled. You can also read each artist's description of their work along with the pictures.
Our current challenge dolls are Angels and Burlesque Dolls. So sit back and enjoy some of the wonderful creations by our artists!
First up--BURLESQUE:
Deena Maurus of Fabby Dolls

This is a cloth face, needle sculpted and then I gessoed the face before painting. The outfit is just "this and that" silk roses, beads, feathers, etc. Since I am trying new techniques and clay was on the top of the list - I will be adding clay arms, shoulder plate and hands (keywords there: trying new techniques)!
I am hoping to have him, no her, I mean him - THE DOLL ready by the deadline!
Cyndi Sowers

Brunhilde Hafthorsson, former Icelandic beauty queen, former heir of a pre-war German chocolate factory, former rising French starlet, reduced to near poverty by her indiscretions with a certain foreign Count, she spent her middle age as a dancer in a now defunct Left Bank French cabaret. A bit past her prime, she is now simply a lady in waiting. She knows not for what.
Jasmoon Butterfly
I wanted a slightly different type of burlesque feel...would like to incorporate a little fae charm if possible, but will be a slightly darker feel.
I used Sculpey original clay, foil, and wire for joints. I am trying a more stark feel than I would normally use so I'm quite excited about how she will develop!
Then--ANGELS:
Linda Searle of Linda Searle Dolls
The Angel challenge is my first with the group – I chose to do it as it seemed a nice way to start with ADO. She’s made from good quality muslin for the body, arms and legs and the head is paperclay over a “pimple” size cloth head.

I built up the paperclay, laying it straight onto the fabric. I then lay strips of paperclay over the head for the hair, blending as I went to help give it texture. I put a small hole through the main “curl” with the aim of either inserting a halo or ribbon. I’m not sure at this stage.
Nicole Johnson of Mealy Monster Land
She is polymer clay. I am going for a evil-ish angel with a creepy, spooky look, maybe a fallen angel. I don't have the whole story worked out yet and it is forming as I make her.

I don't like to do pretty or cute, so of course I went with slightly ugly and creepy. I have made her in parts. I always start with the head, cure it, and then make the body.
More works coming soon! Until next time, Friends, have a great week!
