New Member Spotlight - Jade Perez

It's Sunday and time to meet another new member of the ADO team. Today's spotlight is on Jade Perez of NewAgeDolls. I've been following Jade for awhile now and I can tell you she makes some of the most unique characters I've ever seen. I love how she blends the elements of horror, macabre, and often humor in her marvelous work. Jade describes herself as "a creepy doll artist " but go and see for yourself! You can find more of her work in her etsy shop, website, blog, and Flickr stream. Welcome to the team Jade!

PORCELAIN AND CHINA

Many people today refer to Porcelain Dolls as "China ", which is perhaps derived from China T-Cups and Fine China. China is indeed a porcelain product, but refers to the finish that is applied. In the case of China Dishes, there is a high glaze applied to seal the porcelain. In the 1800's there were indeed China Dolls produced. They had a high glaze finish and may have been loved dearly by your grandmother or great grandmother. The picture above, illustrates the finish on an antique China Head Doll. Today's Victorian porcelains seldom sport this glazed finish, although it is sometimes seen on Clown dolls. Today's dolls are finished in a porcelain finish called bisque.

Did You Know...

Zac Posen uses dolls in his new campaign to promote his new condos in NYC.  The video will be running in taxi cabs that run around the building.

Weird and Wonderful... Nick Cave Soundsuits

Nick Cave Soundsuits
 fashion... body art...sculpture...

His work stands out for it's sheer decorative vehemence.

A blend of African ceremonial costumes, haute couture ensembles, coats of armor, sewing, draping, beading and quilting, also scavenging, supplementing and adorning...
Floral patterns are intensified with embroidery or, most often, sequins, which he dispenses lavishly. But he is equally adept with twigs, white string dipped in black paint, found socks and sweaters, dryer lint and Easter grass. And while he uses these materials in copious amounts, sometimes to grotesque effect, his garments always maintain a distinct and glamorous line.

Nick Cave Soundsuits. Awesome.

Hello again! Our new member spotlight this time is on Tiffany Koornneef who sells her work under the name Zephyr Dreams Dolls. Tiffany hails from Portland, Oregon and has been making her polymer clay dolls for about 2 years. Many of her figures are based on mythology and fairy tales (two of my favorite subjects!) and I think you will agree her work is full of enchantment. 'Little Secret'

All images and text borrowed from my absoutley favourite figurative artist Hannie Sarris

Mind is the master power
that molds and makes
and we are mind
and evermore we take
the tool of thought
and shaping what we will
bring forth a thousand joys
a thousand ills
we think in secret
and it comes to pass
our world is but
our looking glass.
